How to Become a Data Analyst: Skills, Tools and First Projects

Data analysts turn raw data into insights that help organisations make better decisions. Banks, telecoms, retailers, NGOs, governments and startups across Africa all need people who can clean, analyse and explain data. It is one of the most accessible routes into tech because the core tools can be learned without a computer science degree.

What does a data analyst do?

  • Collect data from databases, spreadsheets and other sources
  • Clean it by fixing errors, duplicates and missing values
  • Analyse trends, patterns and performance
  • Build dashboards and reports
  • Explain findings clearly to managers and teams

The core skills

1. Spreadsheets

Excel or Google Sheets remain essential. Learn formulas, lookups (XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP), pivot tables, charts and data cleaning.

2. SQL

SQL is the language used to query databases. Learn to select, filter, sort, join tables and aggregate data. It is often the most important technical skill in analyst interviews.

3. Data visualisation

Learn a business intelligence tool such as Power BI, Tableau or Looker Studio to build interactive dashboards. Free versions are available for learning.

4. Statistics

Understand averages, medians, distributions, correlation and basic sampling, so you avoid misleading conclusions.

5. Python or R (next step)

Python with pandas lets you handle larger datasets and automate repetitive work. It also opens the door to machine learning; see AI in Africa.

6. Communication

The best analysts tell a clear story: what happened, why it matters and what to do next.

A learning plan

Phase Focus Suggested time
1 Spreadsheets and basic statistics 4 to 6 weeks
2 SQL 4 to 6 weeks
3 Power BI or Tableau 4 weeks
4 Portfolio projects 4 to 8 weeks
5 Python with pandas Ongoing

Free resources include university courses on major learning platforms, free tool documentation, and SQL practice websites. See our free coding guide for Python resources.

Portfolio project ideas

  1. Exchange rate tracker: analyse your local currency against the US dollar over time
  2. Retail sales dashboard: use a public dataset to show top products, regions and seasonal trends
  3. Public health or education data: explore open government or World Bank data for your country
  4. Mobile money or fintech trends: analyse published central bank statistics
  5. Your own data: analyse your spending, fitness or study habits

For each project, write a short summary of the question, method, findings and recommendations.

Getting hired

  • Publish projects on GitHub, a portfolio site or LinkedIn
  • Tailor your CV to each role, highlighting tools and results
  • Practise SQL and case-study interview questions
  • Look for analyst roles in banks, telecoms, NGOs and startups, and international remote roles; see Remote Work from Africa
  • Consider an entry-level certification in a BI tool or cloud data platform; see Cloud Certifications Explained
