How to Make Your Smartphone Battery Last Longer

When power is unreliable, every percentage point of battery counts. These tips help your phone last longer on each charge and keep the battery healthy for years.

Part 1: Make each charge last longer

Adjust the screen

  • Lower brightness or use adaptive brightness; the screen is usually the biggest power user
  • Shorten the screen timeout to 30 seconds or one minute
  • Use dark mode, especially on phones with OLED or AMOLED screens
  • Reduce the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz if your phone allows

Use battery saver modes

Battery saver limits background activity, visual effects and syncing. Turn it on early, not just at 10 percent.

Manage connectivity

  • Turn off Bluetooth, location and NFC when not needed
  • In areas with weak signal, your phone uses more power searching for the network; airplane mode can help when you do not need to be reachable
  • Wi-Fi often uses less power than mobile data when the signal is good

Control apps

  • Check Settings > Battery to see which apps use most power
  • Restrict background activity for apps you rarely use
  • Turn off auto-play video in social apps; it also saves mobile data
  • Uninstall apps you do not need, especially those that run constantly
  • Limit notifications

Part 2: Keep the battery healthy for years

Lithium-ion batteries wear out gradually with charge cycles, heat and time.

  • Avoid heat: do not leave your phone in the sun, on a car dashboard, or charging under a pillow. Heat is the biggest enemy of battery health
  • Avoid extremes: keeping charge between roughly 20 and 80 percent reduces stress; many phones offer an optimised or limited charging setting
  • Do not worry about occasional full charges, but avoid regularly running the battery to zero
  • Use good chargers: the original or a certified charger and cable; cheap chargers can damage batteries and are a fire risk
  • Remove thick cases while fast charging if the phone gets very hot
  • Use surge protection, since power often returns with spikes

When to replace the battery

  • Battery health shows significantly reduced capacity
  • The phone shuts down unexpectedly above 0 percent
  • Battery life is much shorter than it used to be
  • The battery is swollen, pushing the screen or back up; stop using and charging it and get it replaced immediately

Use authorised service centres or reputable repairers with genuine parts.

Carry backup power

A quality power bank is the simplest insurance. See Power Banks, Inverters and Solar.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to charge my phone overnight?

Modern phones stop charging when full, and many have optimised charging that holds at 80 percent until you wake. Charge on a hard surface where heat can escape.

Do battery saver apps help?

Usually not. Built-in battery settings are more effective, and some third-party “cleaner” apps waste battery or contain adware.
